What is exactly is Veganuary?
Veganuary was born out of the UK back in 2014 from a non-profit of the same name, encouraging “people worldwide to try vegan for January and beyond.” The organization reported 2020’s campaign resulted in over 400,000 participants. The Big Bang Theory Actress and Veganuary supporter Mayim Bialik explained how the challenge could aid in exploring any questions you may have on veganism: “Do you have a sense that you’d like to switch to a healthier, cleaner, kinder diet, but need more information? Ask questions, try things, do research, and make decisions based on facts, but don’t discount your feelings either. Veganuary is a great place to start exploring!”
What are the Health Benefits of a Vegan Diet?
At Modern Meat, we are very passionate about eating plant foods for a healthier, longer life. We know adopting a plant-based diet, when done correctly, offers many benefits. According to a 2020 study published on MDPI, health benefits include decreased body fat percentage, increased consumption of essential nutritional ingredients, and reduced risk factors for common diseases. The study also reports benefits to extend to well being and mental health. In a 2019 study published on nature.com, researchers found that a plant-based diet has positive effects on the gut microbiome, which can aid brain function.
What about the Planet?
Eating a clean, vegan diet is not only good for your health, but the planet’s too. Meat and Dairy farming takes up the largest percentage of the world’s farmland and makes up 60% of its carbon emissions. It is estimated that the land-use could be reduced by 75% if these industries were removed. In 2018, Science Magazine published a study on Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers. The researcher, Joseph Poore stated that the vegan diet is “the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth.”
How do I start The Veganuary Challenge?
Great question! Firstly, you want to make sure you are selecting the right foods. Just because a meal is vegan, doesn’t mean it’s healthy.
